April raced by in a blur of short weeks and long weekends, with a few purchases along the way. From cool new tops to not-crap protein powder and a book with meaning, here’s what caught our eye and made it into our wardrobes/pantries/bookshelves.
This month we’re also happy/relieved to welcome a fresh shopping perspective, with contributing editor Dan Ahwa sharing some of his April buys.
As always, ‘Nice Things’ remains a strictly #gifted free zone — everything you see here was bought full price, with our own money.
Connor Ives ‘Protect the Dolls’ T-shirt, about $175
On the day that the UK courts decided not to recognise trans people, I bought this. The date was a coincidence: the ruling had not yet passed, but paired with NZ First’s own hateful legislation, it’s a sobering reminder that for trans people and their loved ones each day brings new blows (and lows).
I've long loved Conner Ives’ work and have wanted to own a piece so the opportunity to do that, while helping support trans rights (funds go towards Trans Lifeline, a US-based charity), was a no-brainer. I will wear this top with pride and in solidarity for trans friends and Ensemble whānau, my friends who have trans kids and of course their kids. This one’s for you M. — Rebecca Wadey

The presentation itself was intimate and gorgeous — live jazz, models with personality, sunburn-inspired makeup — but the clothes themselves also looked really well-made. Which was the point: the show was called Mark of the Maker. I was mentally shopping as it progressed, not the only sign of a good show but definitely a strong one.
